Soccer or affiliation football as it is also called is the worlds most popular game and is played from London to the back alleys of Brazil. Over 240 million people from more than 200 countries regularly play football. Modern soccer is a relatively modern game that can trace its origin to the UK where work began to create a unified set of rules for soccer with the draft of the Cambridge rules in 1848. Different soccer games had however been played for a long, long time before that. We know that soccer like games ha been played throughout history. Games similar to soccer include harpastum in the Roman Empire, cuju in China and woggabaliri in Australia. In England we know that soccer has been played at least since the Eight century.
The Cambridge Rules are not the rules used today but they have had very large influence on the rules we today use when playing soccer. The work to create one set on unified soccer rules where made harder by the fact that a lot of soccer teams unrelated to universities developed during this time and some of them used their own rules. One such team was Sheffield Football Club that was formed in 1857. John Charles Thring created another set of rules in 1862 but in the long run the Cambridge rules would be the most influential.
To help speed up the unification process the The Football Association (The FA) was formed in 1863. Initially the FA had very few members but the number of members and its influence over the sport grew over the years. The FA initially included rugby teams as well but these would later secede and form the rugby football union instead. The Sheffield FA played by its own rules until the 1870s at which times the FA started to include some of the Sheffield rules into their rules until there was little real difference between the two sets of rules. The world’s oldest football competition is the FA Cup, founded by C. W. Alcock and that has been played since 1872.
In 1886 the International Football Association Board (IFAB) was formed and IFAB still do this day governs the laws of the game. FIFA was formed in Paris in 1904: FIFA is responsible for and governs the world cup.
The first ever fotball League was formed in England. It was formed in 1888 by Aston Villa director William McGregor and originally contained 12 clubs all from the north of England or the midlands.
