La Liga

La liga (Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (LFP) ) was founded in 1929 and is the premier league in Spain and is home to to team such as Barcelona and Real Madrid. Many would argue that this is the best league in the world although not all would agree. You can read more about this further down on the page.

Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (LFP) contains several division but it just the first division that is referred to as La Liga or more correctly Liga BBVA as it is named after BBVA acquired the naming rights to the league.

The league is home to 20 teams. 59 teams have competed in La Liga over the years but only 9 of those have ever won the title. The bottom 3 teams in the league are demoted to the second division each year and 3 other teams go up to La Liga. The second division is called Segunda División which simply means second division.

La Liga is completely dominated by two teams, Real Madrid and Barcelona. These two teams have dominated the leagues since the 50s and games between to two teams are referred to as “el Clásico” and attracts a very large attendance. Real Madrid have won the title 32 times and Barcelona 21 times. The other teams that has won La Liga is Atlético Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, Valencia, Real Sociedad, Deportivo, Real Betis, and Sevilla.

IFFHS ranks La Liga as the strongest league in the worl. UEFA do however give this honor to Premier League with La Liga in second place.

La Liga attracts big crows and the average attendance is 28,286 or league matches. This is however less than in the Bundesliga and the Premier League.
